I never planned to become a botanical artist.
For years I studied plants as a plant biologist, fascinated by how they grow, adapt and interact with the world around them.
Today, that same curiosity guides my paintings.
I combine scientific observation with a love for nature to create botanical artworks inspired by the garden I call home.
A change of life
In 2023, I left city life and moved to the countryside in Northern Italy, just a few minutes from Lake Maggiore.
Surrounded by a garden, vegetable beds, an orchard and the changing rhythm of the seasons, I found myself paying closer attention to the natural world than ever before.
At that time, I wasn’t an artist. I was simply growing plants, observing them day after day and rediscovering the quiet beauty of everyday nature.
Over time, that way of looking at the world became impossible to ignore, and eventually led me to pick up a paintbrush for the first time.
Living closer to nature awakened a creative side of me I hadn't discovered before. What began as curiosity soon became a daily practice and eventually grew into my work as a botanical artist.
The garden I call home
The garden is much more than a green space. It is a place of observation, experimentation, and everyday life, and the place where most of my botanical paintings begin.
In 2023, my family and I began creating a 3,000-square-metre garden in Northern Italy, where flowers, vegetables, fruit trees, and wildlife share the same space.
Today, it includes twenty no-dig vegetable beds that provide fresh vegetables for much of the year, a compost system that returns nutrients to the soil, an orchard of both newly planted and mature fruit trees, and dozens of flower borders designed to bloom from spring through autumn.
The garden is constantly alive with bees, butterflies, and countless other pollinators. Chickens and ducks wander freely through it every day, and each spring new chicks and ducklings become part of the landscape.
Living and gardening here allows me to observe plants through every stage of their life cycle: from the first buds of spring to seed heads in autumn. These daily observations shape my work as a botanical artist and inspire every illustration I create.
Every corner invites me to slow down and notice the smallest details:the shape of a leaf, the texture of a stem, the way light passes through a petal. It reminds me that every plant has a story worth observing.
This is where I find the plants, colours, and quiet moments that eventually become my paintings.
My inspiration
Before I paint, I observe. I spend time noticing how light passes through petals, how leaves change with the seasons, how insects move among flowers, and how beauty often lies in the smallest details.
My scientific background taught me to look carefully. Gardening taught me to be patient. Painting allows me to transform those observations into something lasting.
Every artwork begins long before I pick up a brush. It begins with paying attention.
My Process
Each painting starts with careful observation and botanical sketches.
Back in my studio, I gradually build the artwork through transparent layers of watercolour, balancing scientific accuracy with a more personal and poetic interpretation.
Rather than creating exact botanical illustrations, I try to capture the feeling of encountering a plant at its most beautiful moment. It's a meditative and joyful process that connects me deeply to nature.
I hope my work encourages you to slow down, look more closely, and rediscover the quiet, extraordinary beauty of the natural world.
