Painting an Autumn Leaf in Watercolour

Join me for a little botanical journey inspired by the colours of autumn.

In this free tutorial, we'll start in the garden, where I'll collect an autumn leaf and explore the science behind its changing colours. Then, we'll move to the painting desk and paint it step by step in watercolour, paying attention to its delicate shapes, veins and subtle colours.

Combining plant science, careful observation and the joy of painting, this tutorial is an invitation to slow down and discover the beauty of the natural world.

The video is narrated in Italian. English subtitles will be available to help you follow along.

Materials

  • A5 watercolour paper, fine grain

  • Watercolour paints: sap green, light yellow, red, blue, burnt sienna

  • Pointy watercolour brush

  • Pencil and eraser

  • Water jar and palette

You don't need exactly the same materials to follow along. Use what you already have and enjoy experimenting with the colours and textures.

Download the outline drawing

To paint along using the same leaf outline, download the printable PDF, print it on A4 paper at 100% scale, and transfer the drawing onto your watercolour paper before you begin. The leaf measures approximately 12 cm in height. Download the free outline drawing (PDF)
